After I was admitted to the doctorate...

In the 1st year of the PhD we learned that we have to write scientific articles.

We had a meeting with all the doctoral students of the school together with the director and the secretary... in which they explained to us from the contract and regulations what indicators we must meet in order to complete our studies.

And at the beginning of the 1st year of my PhD, I had to deal with writing and publishing scientific articles.

I didn't know what it entailed.

At first I knew nothing about writing scientific articles.

My generation at least didn't have an academic writing program during their undergraduate years.

We only had a master's and a doctorate, but far too little, as we needed.

In year 1 together with a colleague we thought of writing the first article and sending it for publication.

Our "surprise" was that he was not good and therefore…

I tried to submit to other magazines, and we got rejection after rejection.

I didn't understand what they were missing, what they should look like, what journals were looking for in a scientific article... I was already afraid to submit any more articles to a journal because of the rejections.

Without receiving information about what exactly we should improve.

Year 1 was compromised of article writing.

Year 2 followed and we had to attend conferences. The university conferences were already starting in the fall. I participated with two papers in the abstract version.

But, in the same way, I was not able to publish them when I had them in their final form, in the extenso version.

The biggest problem arises when…

... and then you will have to write other articles in a short time, because you have a little bit left until the defense of the doctoral thesis...

But as you well know, quality articles don't get published that fast.

Magazines issue issues at a certain period of time.

And that's the hardest thing.

Because that means you have to put your PhD on hold.

It is quite stressful and frustrating.

High-impact journals accept less than 10% of articles submitted to them.

It just creates a vicious circle...

In 2016 I started attending more conferences with an abstract.

My goal was that for each presentation of the candidates, I would write down my theme, what purpose they formulated, what objectives they used, what methods they applied and what results they reached.

I was even writing down my questions from the hall. That way I knew what questions the journal's editors and reviewers would actually ask themselves as well.

… that I failed to publish in time.

In 2017, I was already in my 3rd year, with up-to-date reports, participation in conferences and no published articles... I did not meet the conditions to enter the supporting exam.

During the 3 years of doctoral studies, you must document yourself, develop research methodology, apply research tools, write, support scientific reports, publish scientific articles and participate in international conferences.

Normally you can do this in year 3 as well. But year 3 goes by very quickly.

So you should focus only on writing your PhD thesis, because this work has many stages to go through and it takes a lot of time to bring it to its final form.

I couldn't find materials.

I looked for specific books on the subject and was disappointed that I couldn't find anything that interested me.

The first semester course on academic writing didn't help me on the practical side either.

There were too many questions and too many unanswered problems. And the teachers didn't have enough time for us.

... except he won't have all the time in the world for me regarding the problems I was having throughout the writing of the article.

And problems arise at every step of writing the article.

We talked to our professor and he recommended that in the first year we should not publish articles, but rather focus on learning how to write articles.

... because the scientific article is a personal work of the PhD student.

I found myself towards the end that…

It was not at all easy for me to look for materials on how I could write scientific articles.

You must be directly involved and control everything, down to the smallest detail.

I remember that at the conference in the fall of 2015, a professor from Timișoara had come and had a seminar dedicated to doctoral students about where they should publish articles.

That's how I found out that there are ISI articles that are published in different areas and that we can publish all year round even for free.

Since then, I started to take things much more seriously and started to analyze the top journals, to make analysis sheets of the published articles, to find out how they should be written.

For 1 year, that's all I did. I made my handouts upon handouts.

And with time I improved.

Then I started to learn concretely how to write each section of the article, how they should be formulated, what is the order of the ideas... I put several books and materials from the English language together.

At the same time, I was looking on all the forums...

Rejecting items is the most stressful part of this whole stage…

So... I started to build my puzzle, I combined the theoretical and the practical part.

And so I saw the big picture of what a scientific article should look like.

Scientific articles are for sharing your own original research with other scientists or for reviewing research done by others.

As such, they are critical to the evolution of modern science, where the work of one scientist builds on that of others.

And it's normal not to know how things are, what to write and how to organize your work.

It's normal to feel that much of the information you've started writing is beside the point.

From the initial stages of generating original ideas and planning the paper, to writing and presenting it.

However, there are several tactics that can help you increase the acceptability of your scientific articles.

It is very important to document yourself very well and have solid arguments based on what other researchers in your field have studied.

I started collecting the data for my PhD thesis on a larger sample and started writing my first article.

I applied all the information I had learned up to that point. And to my surprise, the article was accepted, with no further revisions needed.

I've already started to gain confidence in myself and I said it's time to continue.

And I started writing article after article, which started to get indexed in the best databases (ProQuest, Emerald, Scopus, Ebsco Host, etc.) and also have ISI articles in the yellow zone with impact factor 2.03.

Now I am a reviewer for various international ISI journals and I provide feedback to researchers from Romania and abroad.

But…

Practicing and reading a lot.

Quality writing uses just the right words to say the right things. Fluent, clear and expressive sentences are required.

Fluent sentences are easy to understand.

Writing is intimidating to many people, especially those who don't write for a living or on a regular basis.

The good news is that writing doesn't have to be grueling, and almost anyone can improve their writing skills through discipline and a willingness to learn.

During all these years, I improved my academic writing, participating in countless: internships in universities in the country, national and international trainings, national and international workshops, international courses, reading courses in English, cutting-edge scientific articles and specialist books in English...
