My name is Lorraine.

In 2009, I enrolled with great enthusiasm at the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Iasi, Romania.

The years passed quite quickly, so that in May 2011 I had to choose my bachelor's thesis.

I didn't know anything about what and how I should choose my theme. I have never done this before.

We received a list of undergraduate subjects from the secretariat and had to choose in order of preference what we would like to research.

I didn't know what topics to choose.

I went to the faculty library to document myself and looked at some books that seemed interesting to me.

I started browsing them and so I made the decision to opt for the "Professional Career" theme.

I submitted the application to the secretariat with the order of the assignments, because we had to tick several options, so as not to be left out.

A teacher cannot coordinate more than 10-15 students and then I left room to be able to assign me according to the average years of studies to the next assignment, if the teacher was going to be available.

My greatest joy was that I stuck with the first option.

I didn't know anything about the teacher who was going to coordinate me... because I found out in the meantime that he was retired, but he was still taking students for guidance.

Other colleagues of mine chose their teacher based on their likes. If the teacher was nice in class or seminar... or if the teacher was going to be the head or member of the evaluation committee.

On the principle that they will be advantaged or supported on the day of the presentation. It's just that reality has shown that it doesn't matter if you have someone on the committee, it matters what you wrote and how you present your work.

At first I didn't know anything about the bachelor's thesis.

And at the beginning of the 3rd year of college, I had to deal with writing my bachelor's thesis.

Year 3 has come.

In the first semester I didn't write anything.

In fact, I didn't even know when I had to start writing, how to start writing, how to get in touch with the teacher, what I had to do...

Nothing...

Nada...

I found myself having to document myself.

It was not at all easy for me to search for materials, especially international bibliography.

In the 2nd semester, around March, I heard a conversation between two colleagues that they had to start writing their bachelor's degree...

I eavesdropped and got into the discussion about what should be done... One of my colleagues has a sister 2 years older than us, who went through the stage we were going to go through, at the same faculty and the same specialization, he knew the stages of writing the paper.

That's how I found out that I also have to write the license. Obviously I didn't even know what I should write. But talking with my colleagues I found out that we have to go to the library and make a work plan, which we are going to present to the coordinator, so that he can validate it. I understood from my colleagues that some professors also requested the bibliography.

I just went with the content. To my surprise it was properly made, only small improvements were made.

I didn't know how to proceed here either. I learned that I needed to document myself from books and scientific articles and start writing.

I managed to write the two theoretical chapters. But I had emotions because I didn't know if what I wrote was good.

Plagiarism never crossed my mind. I went with the two chapters on the stick, but I also took out in printed format, so that the teacher could tell me what is written well and what is not.

He told me that my paper was not plagiarized and that I could continue with the practical part.

He gave me some recommendations on how I could do this part. On the practical side, it was difficult to find a company that would help provide me with the data I needed. I received many rejections or even worse no response.

I started asking left and right what's going on, why no one wants to give me data. I found out that a lot of the data is confidential and besides that they have no interest in helping you unless you give something in return.

Finally, I found a company that "took pity" on me and offered me the opportunity to apply for interviews and questionnaires. But instead I had to help them on the marketing side, because they needed help in the company. Said and done.

Practicing and reading a lot.

Quality writing uses just the right words to say the right things. Fluent, clear and expressive sentences are required.

Fluent sentences are easy to understand.

Writing is intimidating to many people, especially those who don't write for a living or on a regular basis.

The good news is that writing doesn't have to be grueling, and almost anyone can improve their writing skills through discipline and a willingness to learn.

The bachelor defense consists of two tests:

Completion of the bachelor's thesis and assessment of fundamental and specialized knowledge.

Presentation and support of the bachelor.

The grade obtained is the average of the 4 examiners. And the results cannot be disputed.

But you have a long way to go before you get to sit your BA... You have to choose your BA theme as early as the spring of year 2, others choose their theme as early as year 3.

After that begins the documentation stage, the literature search, the creation of the plan and the actual writing of the paper.

The biggest problem comes when your work isn't…

…because you didn't know what to write and it shows up as plagiarism… and then you'll have to redo the whole thing. And that's the hardest thing.

I don't think you want to be in this situation...

Keep in mind that teachers have all the tools to check if you wrote the paper. Once is through the questions they ask you, when you go to the consultation. Then, through the bibliography. After that, they check your work in the software, if the percentage of plagiarism is too high, it's serious, and if it's 0% plagiarism, it's serious.

Also, after you pass the work verification stage, they are interested in the average years of study and if everything is in order, they evaluate you based on a grid, regarding the part of: originality, communication, the actual completion of the work and bibliography.

A score is given for each component. At the end, the average is calculated and that is the grade with which you enter the exam from the coordinator.

Which by the way is only worth 25%. You have a lot of work to do to get to this stage, right?

But there is still a difficult threshold to cross...

Practically 75% represents the mark of the committee members. However, the committee members will take into account the average years of study, the evaluation grid completed by the coordinator and the way you present and answer questions.

Do not forget that at the defense, the committee members will do their best to find mistakes or ambiguities in your paper, which will shut you down, if you do not know what you wrote in it and took information without filtering it first.

It is a day full of emotions, of anxiety because you don't know what they will ask you, if they will find mistakes in your work and take you to task, and the stress will increase more and more, if you have not allocated enough time and you didn't do your job professionally.

Unfortunately, I have not seen a practical plan or a source of academic writing that everyone can understand.

Everything that exists is at the level of books, some of which you understand and not much, because they are not complete. And then you need a book and another book, but they never quite fill in the information you need.

Then, in some faculties, the academic writing part is taught, but at a general level and not in-depth or personalized. While in other faculties academic writing is not taught at all and it is up to the students to document themselves.

My generation at least didn't have an academic writing course in their undergraduate years. We only had a master's and a doctorate, but far too little, as we needed.

I taught myself about research, public speaking, how to give professional presentations, how to document myself professionally, how to find professional databases and without a college subscription, academic writing and writing in general with the help of thousands of books, articles and research materials.

I attended many paid conferences, courses and seminars worth over 10,000 euros to understand this whole process.
