In 2014, I had my dissertation defended at the doctoral school, because the director of the school had requested it.

The teacher was even part of the committee and at the end she urged us to enroll in the program.

I liked the idea and I said that I should try it, I just have nothing to lose.

... and I came up with a thesis title and a mini-report about what I would like to study in the coming years.

The teacher accepted me and told me to prepare for the exam. The exam at that time was both written and oral.

There were a lot of books to learn and then at the oral presentation we had to have a written report and present it to the committee.

I remember that I stayed in Iași all summer and studied. I haven't been away on any vacation. Not even at my parents' house.

I was with 2 other colleagues and I had as much emotion as the house. What will he give us in the exam? Are we going to go in? That's what we keep asking ourselves.

I took the written exam, it was not easy at all.

Then the next day we had the presentation of the report.

In the afternoon the results were displayed.

I found out that I was admitted, but my two colleagues were not.

I was upset that I didn't know anyone anymore.

And we were asked for progress reports every 6 months, in which to apply the practical research.

I can say that it was not easy to make the progress reports.

A large part of my colleagues got a good, sufficient or insufficient qualification. And insufficient means that you have to redo the whole report again within 3 months, otherwise you are expelled.

Some colleagues quit because they did not have the help they expected from the coordinator.

They thought they would get materials, writing tips, etc. Disappointments and frustrations were in line with their expectations. I mean very big.

At first I didn't know anything about the PhD thesis.

And at the beginning of the 3rd year of college, I had to take care of writing my doctoral thesis.

I tried to talk to my coordinator.

I admit that it was not easy for me either.

The coordinator didn't have time for me, he couldn't answer all my questions.

It seemed to me that the doctorate is much tougher than what happens at the bachelor's and dissertation...

It was then that I realized that the PhD was really unlike anything I had done before.

And that if you manage to complete your doctorate you are the best.

I found myself having to document myself.

It was not at all easy for me to search for materials, especially international bibliography.

But, the teacher always told me that everything I will write in the reports to put in the thesis, because the reports are actually parts of the paper.

I passed the first theoretical report from the summer of 2015 with the qualification Very good.

In March 2016, for the second report I had to present the research methodology, including the construction of the research instruments: interview, questionnaire, experiment and observation sheets. I passed this report with flying colors as well.

Instead, in September 2016, I already had to present the results of some studies in the third report. And I remember that we also needed to publish some articles. And in the summer before the submission of report 3, I contacted several professors to collaborate with on the writing part of scientific articles regarding the methodology.

... and proposed to me that we form a research team, where we go to study the doctoral theses in: Iași, Bucharest and Cluj, during the February vacation.

We made a database of what information to collect and sent a team of 8 people to analyze over 4000 theses. Each of us took 500 theses for analysis.

Honestly, when we went to get our hands on the theses and browse them, it was like grabbing God by the leg. Because we, the PhD students, finally understood too. what a thesis should look like and what it should contain. It was very useful experience.

After 500 analyzed papers, I knew what a very good paper should contain.

This experience helped me so much that I changed my whole perspective on the paper and I knew what I needed to write and improve.

In support of the last two reports...

I received praise and congratulations for the way I thought and structured the paper.

I came up with many new elements and personal contributions.

My thesis was taking on a new dimension.

But, I had an obstacle...

...I postponed my thesis defense for another year, because I had not been able to publish articles on time.

I was so focused on how to write a really good PhD thesis that I neglected to write the scientific articles on time.

But, at first I didn't even know how to write them and I was afraid of rejections.

In the last year I focused first on publishing the number of articles required by the contract and then put all my reports together and managed to make the final form of the thesis.

On the day of the support, I was with two more colleagues from Israel.

I was the first to support, at 9:00 in the morning, with a full hall.

I can say that I was quite calm and relaxed, because I was very sure of what I wrote, I had publications, conferences and experience in the field studied.

... unlike my colleagues who were bombarded with all kinds of questions... I had no questions, only small curiosities.

But right after my support ended... I took the elevator and went outside.

I couldn't believe I was done.

I had the same feeling when I received the acceptance to support the paper in public meeting... because few receive the acceptance.

But, it's an experience like no other and it strengthens you.

After a PhD I can say that nothing stands in your way.

Because it hardened you.

After defending the thesis, in February of the following year, I found out about the 3MT competition. And I signed up out of curiosity.

I had to give my thesis presentation in 3 minutes in front of a college committee. Where I had a good presentation and was accepted to go on to the university phase.

The day of the university phase came, where I took 2nd place and the popularity award from the committee and the auditor.

I was not satisfied with the 2nd place so...

I said that this time I would like...

...practicing and reading a lot.

Quality writing uses just the right words to say the right things. Fluent, clear and expressive sentences are required.

Fluent sentences are easy to understand.

Writing is intimidating to many people, especially those who don't write for a living or on a regular basis.

The good news is that writing doesn't have to be grueling, and almost anyone can improve their writing skills through discipline and a willingness to learn.

I knew how to answer the questions.

The questions and answers are the most stressful part of the already stressful experience of sitting in front of a committee and presenting, and the hardest part is getting tough questions.

However, there are several tactics that can help you solve difficult questions smoothly.

It is very important that you write your paper yourself, know what you have written in it, document yourself very well and have solid arguments based on what other researchers in your field have studied.

With this principle in mind... I had no problems with the presentation. And I know how to answer even the most difficult questions from the committee.

The defense of the doctoral thesis consists of two tests:

Completion of the doctoral thesis and assessment of fundamental and specialist knowledge.

Presentation and defense of the doctoral thesis.

The grade obtained is the average of the 4 examiners (the coordinating teacher and the 3 members of the guidance committee).

If everything is in order, the work is sent further for evaluation to the committee in Bucharest.

You must know that the results cannot be disputed.

But until you get to give it the final shape and defend your PhD thesis...

Unlike students, thesis work does not stop after exams or reports, where you can enjoy a long summer without studying, as there are no such periods for a PhD.

During the 2 years of doctoral studies, you must document yourself, write, support scientific reports, publish scientific articles and participate in international conferences.

And the 3rd year goes by very quickly, so you should focus only on writing your PhD thesis, because this work has many stages to go through and it takes a lot of time to bring it to its final form.

The biggest problem comes when your work isn't…

…because you didn't know what to write and it shows up as plagiarism… and then you'll have to redo the whole thing. And that's the hardest thing.

I don't think you want to be in this situation...

Keep in mind that teachers have all the tools to check if you wrote the paper. Once is through the questions they ask you, when you go to the consultation. Then, through the bibliography. After that, they check your work in the software, if the percentage of plagiarism is too high, it's serious, and if it's 0% plagiarism, it's serious.

Also, after you pass the work verification stage, they are interested in the average years of study and if everything is in order, they evaluate you based on a grid, regarding the part of: originality, communication, the actual completion of the work and bibliography.

A score is given for each component. At the end, the average is calculated and that is the grade with which you enter the exam from the coordinator.

Which by the way is only worth 25%. You have a lot of work to do to get to this stage, right?

But there is still a difficult threshold to cross...

Practically 75% represents the mark of the committee members. However, the committee members will take into account the average years of study, the evaluation grid completed by the coordinator and the way you present and answer questions.

Do not forget that at the defense, the committee members will do their best to find mistakes or ambiguities in your paper, which will shut you down, if you do not know what you wrote in it and took information without filtering it first.

It is a day full of emotions, of anxiety because you don't know what they will ask you, if they will find mistakes in your work and take you to task, and the stress will increase more and more, if you have not allocated enough time and you didn't do your job professionally.

You must know that...

Unfortunately, here in Romania, nor abroad, we have not seen a practical plan or a source of academic writing that everyone can understand.

Everything that exists is at the level of books, some of which you understand and not much, because they are not complete. And then you need a book and another book, but they never quite fill in the information you need.

Then, in some faculties, the academic writing part is taught, but at a general level and not in-depth or personalized. While in other faculties academic writing is not taught at all and it is up to the students to document themselves.

My generation at least didn't have an academic writing course during their PhD years. I only had it in the 1st year of my doctorate, in the first semester, but far too little, as we needed.
