My name is Lorena.

After the summer of 2012, I received a leaflet with the master's programs. I was sitting with my friend on the bench and I was wondering whether or not to go to the master's degree. Because I didn't know if it was worth it or not. However, studying the programs more carefully, two new master's programs caught my attention, which were in line with the market's requirements.

I said I'm going to sign up, I just have nothing to lose. If I go to tax, I quit.

The first option this time failed, because the maximum number of students required was not met in order to do the master's degree. I entered the second option. I said it's ok and move on.

In May 2013, we had to choose our coordinator and propose to him the topic we thought about. As soon as I found out that the selection of the coordinator had started, I went to the office door so that no one else would take it... on the principle that a teacher cannot take more than 10-15 students for coordination.

I had the homework, because I liked the discipline he had taught. And I chose a more general theme, because I didn't really know what I was going to write in it, and I wanted to have the freedom to choose along the way. It wasn't a really great idea, because a general theme takes you in too many directions. But, I was lucky that the teacher guided me correctly.

After I had the coordinator, the chosen topic, I submitted the application to the secretariat and it was approved... I took a stone from my heart. I was at peace with the fact that I had chosen the right thing.

At first I didn't know anything about dissertation work.

And at the beginning of the 3rd year of college, I had to write my dissertation.

I had understood from the coordinator that the dissertation work is not like the undergraduate work and is much more complex.

I didn't know what he was referring to...

It made me think...

I found myself having to document myself.

It was not at all easy for me to search for materials, especially international bibliography.

I collected data, I made hard copies of books. I said this time I am collecting a lot of materials. And indeed I had a mountain of books piled up on the library table. And the librarians, when they passed by my table, said: "Don't take more than 2-3 books, leave them with others." They kept repeating this to me until the summer of 2014.

I started studying very seriously how books and scientific articles are written, what language and style they use, what verbs they use, what connectors, what examples they give, how they did the studies. We are still analyzing.

I wanted to become an expert on what I write.

At that time I didn't know that I could actually read scientific articles from home, I found out later, in the 1st year of my PhD, from a colleague.

I made my dissertation plan and also made a list of the bibliography and went to the supervisor. He accepted my plan, I told him roughly what I wanted to write, he gave me some directions and gave me the green light to start writing.

From October to the end of November I documented myself and collected materials...

I started writing since December. I know that we had a calendar that we were recommended to follow, because this aspect was also taken into account in the evaluation. That every 3 months we present the result of our work. I stuck to this schedule and presented the progress of my dissertation work at each term.

I had no problems with the specialized literature part, I knew what and how to write.

We had to do an internship, in which to make a report, and it was preferable to use that company for the dissertation work as well.

I ran into the same refusals. I went to the teacher and he told me: You don't know how to sell yourself!

And he didn't tell me anything more. How do I sell myself? It was in my head... I mean, what exactly do I have to do? I wrote to all of them in an e-mail that I need to do an internship and if they can help me.

I finally applied to the same company where I did my internship and my degree. I didn't want to practice with them at all. I wanted to see other organizations. But it was not to be.

Finally, I did the internship and managed to apply for the interviews as well.

I was happy that I managed to collect the data and that I will be able to defend my dissertation. Because until recently I was sitting with my heart as a flea, because there was no one to help me.

I performed the data analysis and interpretation and managed to complete my entire paper.

I took the work to check. Everything was fine and I received the acceptance to enter the exam and I was also informed of the grade with which I will enter the defense. I was happy.

This time, I did not repeat the presentation with the coordinator, as I did in the undergraduate. I made the PowerPoint presentation, I wrote the speech. I emailed the materials to the teacher, he confirmed that everything was fine and wished me luck!

The day of the defense came, still Thursday, still hot, still in the afternoon, like in the case of the bachelor.

But, in the building of the doctoral school... that maybe, maybe, one of us also goes to the doctorate.

This time, we all sat in one room. I didn't stand in the hallway anymore.

It was interesting to see the endorsements of each colleague. Somehow we pulled through that day.

It was a different vibe...like you were sorry it was ending.

But the teachers were demanding and asked question after question.

But we also intervened to lighten the atmosphere.

I had a general theme and analyzed quite a lot in the practical part. It would have taken me 15 minutes to present everything.

However, I managed to narrow down the information and present what is most relevant.

I finished presenting, and there were no questions. They were just little curiosities.

It was really good.

I remember that there were 5 colleagues after me and we had to be told the results.

The colleagues to present also finished and we were informed of the results. I was satisfied with the grade.

And I said I'm not stopping here.

But, I can say that writing the dissertation was quite a difficult process, because I had to find out all of them by myself and ask each other.

But over time I improved...

Practicing and reading a lot.

Quality writing uses just the right words to say the right things. Fluent, clear and expressive sentences are required.

Fluent sentences are easy to understand.

Writing is intimidating to many people, especially those who don't write for a living or on a regular basis.

The good news is that writing doesn't have to be grueling, and almost anyone can improve their writing skills through discipline and a willingness to learn.

The questions and answers are the most stressful part of the already stressful experience of sitting in front of a committee and presenting, and the hardest part is getting tough questions.

However, there are several tactics that can help you solve difficult questions smoothly.

It is very important that you write your paper yourself, know what you have written in it, document yourself very well and have solid arguments based on what other researchers in your field have studied.

With this principle in mind... I had no problems with the presentation. And I know how to answer even the most difficult questions from the committee.

The defense of the dissertation consists of two tests:

Completion of the dissertation and assessment of fundamental and specialist knowledge.

Presentation and defense of the dissertation.

The grade obtained is the average of the 4 examiners. And the results cannot be disputed.

But you have a long way to go before you get to your dissertation... You have to choose your dissertation topic as early as the spring of Year 1.

After that begins the documentation stage, the literature search, the creation of the plan and the actual writing of the paper.

The biggest problem comes when your work isn't…

…because you didn't know what to write and it shows up as plagiarism… and then you'll have to redo the whole thing. And that's the hardest thing.

I don't think you want to be in this situation...

Keep in mind that teachers have all the tools to check if you wrote the paper. Once is through the questions they ask you, when you go to the consultation. Then, through the bibliography. After that, they check your work in the software, if the percentage of plagiarism is too high, it's serious, and if it's 0% plagiarism, it's serious.

Also, after you pass the work verification stage, they are interested in the average years of study and if everything is in order, they evaluate you based on a grid, regarding the part of: originality, communication, the actual completion of the work and bibliography.

A score is given for each component. At the end, the average is calculated and that is the grade with which you enter the exam from the coordinator.

Which by the way is only worth 25%. You have a lot of work to do to get to this stage, right?

But there is still a difficult threshold to cross...

Practically 75% represents the mark of the committee members. However, the committee members will take into account the average years of study, the evaluation grid completed by the coordinator and the way you present and answer questions.

Do not forget that at the defense, the committee members will do their best to find mistakes or ambiguities in your paper, which will shut you down, if you do not know what you wrote in it and took information without filtering it first.

It is a day full of emotions, of anxiety because you don't know what they will ask you, if they will find mistakes in your work and take you to task, and the stress will increase more and more, if you have not allocated enough time and you didn't do your job professionally.

Unfortunately, I have not seen a practical plan or a source of academic writing that everyone can understand.

Everything that exists is at the level of books, some of which you understand and not much, because they are not complete. And then you need a book and another book, but they never quite fill in the information you need.

Then, in some faculties, the academic writing part is taught, but at a general level and not in-depth or personalized. While in other faculties academic writing is not taught at all and it is up to the students to document themselves.

My generation, at least, didn't have an academic writing course during their advanced master's years. We had some in the PhD, but far too little, as we needed.

I taught myself about research, public speaking, how to give professional presentations, how to document myself professionally, how to find professional databases and without a college subscription, academic writing and writing in general with the help of thousands of books, articles and research materials.
